6 Mistakes to avoid when charged with a crime.

Don't talk to friends or family about the facts of your case. You never know who might be called as a witness against you by the prosecution.

Don't talk to the police about your case or call the District Attorney's office to find out what's going on. As Mark Twain said, "I never regretted a word I didn't say." Don't self incriminate. Anything you say to the police can and will be used against you. If the police do contact you, tell them politely, "Officer, I'd really like to help you out but I hope you understand that I don't want to answer any questions without my lawyer." Or more to the point, "I'm taking the fifth!" This is an emergency situation. You should call us immediately, even after hours, and tell the answering service that you need to talk to a lawyer right now.

If the police come to your house, don't let anyone lie that you're not there. That's obstruction of justice. Don't let them in the house either. If they come in, tell them to leave. This is also an emergency (see number 2 above).

Don't contact the victim, victim's family, or friends of the victim. You don't want to be accused of witness tampering.

If you've been released from custody be sure to read your release agreement for terms and conditions of release.

Don't leave the state without the court's permission. Your attorney can get permission for you by filing the proper paperwork.
